[ Their mission to escort these merchants through the dense forest is abruptly interrupted by a flock of monsters emerging from the foliage. At first, Severa and Fern are doing okay staying to the front and keeping the monsters away from the merchants and their carts.
However. Things are not looking good for them. The commotion creates enough noise to get the attention of two extra monsters to surround them. In order to take care of the additional creatures, Severa and Fern had to split up their formation. Now they're too far apart.
She looks around. Three monsters are in front of her... Where's the last one? ]
No way—hey, watch out!
[ The last of the monsters, a large bear-like creature with red eyes and long claws protruding from its paws, comes in from behind the carts to lunge at the merchants.
Without hesitating, Severa rushes over to get in between the monster and the civilians. If she doesn't make it in time, there's no hope for them. ]
[ In spite of the increasing danger, Fern still feels calm and in control. Speed and concentration are her greatest strengths in combat; the main issue is that their caravan is getting swarmed in all directions, which makes it difficult to look out for everyone that they're supposed to be protecting.
Still, kill by kill, she and Severa are managing to hold out and thin the monsters out. Fern's chilly gaze settles on the threats in front—the last that remain, hopefully?—and she aims with her staff. Then Severa's shout seizes her attention, and Fern turns her head with a jerk.
It all seems to slow down in her head, for a fraction of a second: the lunging monster, the sheen on its razor-sharp claws, the nearest merchant recoiling in fear, and Severa's desperate rush to intercept. Fern's eyes widen. There's still a chance, a tiny opening, she just has to— ]
Zoltraak.
[ The deadly beam of magic fires straight and true, directly to the monster's chest. But then Fern's expression tightens when, instantaneously, Severa shifts partway into the path of the spell. ]
[ Why is it that in the heat of the moment, when she needs to be at the top of her game the most, her body feels so heavy? Severa's steps feel like they lag behind, moving too slow, her arms fighting against gravity to swing her sword upwards and clash with the bear's claws striking down. She's almost there, just another step and then...
The merchant shrieks. It startles Severa enough that her foot slips, and in the next second she's falling forward, right when a bright flash of light blinds her. ]
Agh!
[ She hits the ground. A burning sensation runs up the better part of her right calf; at the point of impact, the metal of her armor is melted, the fabric of her pants singed, and a burn mark marring her skin.
Not too far away from her is the bear, nothing but a corpse on the ground now. The merchant's cart shows signs of being pushed around a bit, but otherwise undamaged. The merchants cower by the trees where they'd been able to get out of Fern's way.
There's one last monster left, lurching behind Fern. Severa grits her teeth and tries to push herself up. Pain shoots up her leg, but if she doesn't get up now then... ]
[ Fern has always been taught to be careful and precise with her magic. As such, she's never actually injured someone she wasn't meaning to injure—so this is a first, and it feels shocking and awful enough to totally ruin her concentration.
It's just her staring blankly for a few seconds after unleashing Zoltraak. From where she's standing, she can't tell how badly hurt Severa is. She needs to go to her, to check the damage and protect her directly from any remaining monsters. In her panic, Fern doesn't register that the last remaining threat is behind her, readying an attack.
Severa's shout does get her attention—thank goodness. Fern dashes and dives away; the monster's claws rip into the hem of her robe, cutting clean through, barely missing her leg. Still, after leaping with her whole body, Fern lands awkwardly in the grass. She scrambles onto her backside, sitting up, but there's not really any time for her to aim and fire with her staff with the monster bearing down. ]
[ It takes Severa the amount of time Fern realizes the situation, see the monster coming from behind, and jump for cover, to get back up on her feet. She's shaky, leaning most of her weight onto her left side, but as long as she can still stand—she can still fight.
She picks up her sword from the ground. Her eyes settle on the monster and Fern. ]
Let's finish this!
[ Severa charges forward with a loud cry. The monster squeals as she catches its attention and rushes straight for her. She takes a deep breath in, pulls her sword up, and then on her exhale, swings it downward in a single strike. ]
... I think that does it.
[ The monster falls at her feet. She looks around to get an idea of where everyone else is. Limping, she makes her way over to Fern. ]
[ Fern freezes up once when she hears Severa shout, but fortunately, the noise succeeds in getting the monster's attention. Fern's hands squeeze hard around her staff, and she tries to aim again as the beast shifts, then lunges to meet Severa's attack.
If she fires she could hit her again, so she doesn't. Once it's over, and Severa approaches—limping—Fern can only stare up at her with a blank sort of look. It's hard to remember the last time that she's screwed up this badly, and it makes her feel sick. ]
What are you doing?
[ Frustrating. Embarrassing. These are not emotions that Fern handles well. Front-liners like Severa are tough, she knows that, but... ]
You're the one that's hurt.
[ Fern helps herself up, rebuffing Severa's offer. Once she's on her feet, though, she ends up just standing there rather awkwardly. Honestly, she wants to apologize, but the words are gummed up in her throat. ]
[ Severa can't hide the scowl on her face. Watching Fern get up on her own, rejecting her help, hurts just as bad as the pain shooting up her leg. Ok, fine then.
She takes a deep breath, steels herself. There's a mission to finish, and it won't happen on its own. ]
We're running behind. If we leave now, we can get to town by dusk.
[ The two merchants are looking over their cargo and ensuring it's all secured in the back of the cart. Severa moves past Fern to make her way over to see if she can help them. ]
